Sunday, APRIL 15, 2018, Miró Inspired Abstracts at Vita Art Center

This workshop will look to Joan Miró for inspiration using gouache and ink we will create abstract art incorporating geometric, biomorphic and imagined shapes painted with bright colors.

Miró a part of the Surrealist movement invented a new kind of pictorial space in which carefully rendered objects issuing strictly from the artist's imagination are juxtaposed with basic, recognizable forms - a sickle moon, a simplified dog, a ladder. There is the sense that they have always coexisted both in the material realm and in the shallow pictorial space of Miró's art.

Sunday, MAY 20, 2018, Flor and Fauna, Henri Rousseau Inspired at the Museum of Ventura County

Painting in acrylics we will create bold and colorful images of tropical flowers and plants.

Rousseau was best known for his bold pictures of the jungle, teeming with flora and fauna. Yet this painter of exotic locales never left France, notwithstanding stories to the contrary. His paintings were instead the concoctions of a city dweller, shaped by visits to the botanical gardens, the zoo, and colonial expositions as well as images of distant lands seen in books and magazines. A counterpoint to his pictures of a tranquil and familiar Paris, these images of seductive and terrifying faraway places reflected the desires and fears of new modern world.

Sunday, JUNE 10, 2018, Collage, Kurt Schwitters inspired at the Museum of Ventura County

Kurt Schwitters could see no reason why used tram tickets, bits of driftwood, buttons and old junk from attics and rubbish heaps should not serve well as materials for paintings; they suited the purpose just as well as factory-made paints for Schwitters as they will for us while we create collages from found and discarded items.

Schwitters is most famous for his abstract collages which he began to make in the winter of 1918/19 using found and everyday objects such as labels, bus tickets, fabric and bits of broken wood. They were born out of his post-war feeling: ‘Everything had broken down and new things had to be made out of the fragments

Class Overview:

But first...a peek into my thoughts on… learning new skills. We can have knowledge on how to ride a bike, ...but gaining the skills to actually ride the bike takes “doing it” and making a ton of mistakes……each mistake is a lesson. Mistakes are celebrated in this class……Mistakes means we will grow and achieve greater degrees of proficiency. Because of the amazing properties of clay…..dirt and minerals……we will practice 3 basic skills that give us a higher degree of a successful firing. Our clay pieces will literally be tested by fire, (about 2000 degrees) so the construction techniques are as important as the creative vision. Being involved with art requires the artist to take responsibility for themselves and their work space. Students will independently set up and clean up their work spaces.
